CURATORIAL FOCUS

Bringing archival and contemporary sources into direct dialogue, exploring new relationships with painting, sculpture, photography, video and site-specific interventions.

As a city Banaras with its associations with pilgrimage and ancient temples defies our expectation from a global city Biennale. Yet its repositories of art, literature and musical history, its stature as a centre for learning and the confluence of the principal faiths of the subcontinent make it a natural magnet for creative endeavour.

Working with the collections at the Bharat Kala Bhavan is an illuminating exercise in discovery. To bring to light some of the objects from this rich and cohesive archive into conversation with contemporary works is a unique and challenging opportunity. A newer model of curation suggests itself, allowing for the Biennale to determine its own final form and outcome.
